Comparing one very small chart between two countries (Israel vs. Sweden) on separate continents with completely different lifestyles and customs over a brief amount of time relative to the entire pandemic is irresponsible and simply wishful amateur journalism.
1. Israel WAS one of the highest vaccinated countries initially, however, they have currently fallen to 50th and Sweden is actually 40th (based upon the percentage of population vaccinated). Because Israel was so early, the unanticipated waning of vaccine effectiveness ended up arriving contemporaneously with the delta variant. Though most hospitalizations and deaths were occurring among the unvaccinated. 2. Sweden hasn't had its third wave yet and comparing one country mid-wave to another between waves is purposefully deceitful. Maybe they never will have a 3rd or 4th wave and that may be a blessing and we'll need to look at how that was achieved down the road but it certainly has nothing to do with herd immunity (same number of cases as Israel).
3. The countries are roughly the same population sizes yet Sweden has nearly twice as many dead 14,836 vs 7,843.
4. Sweden has performed 2.5 times less tests than Israel leaving many cases unreported. Sweden has also admitted underreporting deaths in nursing homes, probably, in part, to cover for the political mistakes they made.
4. A large confounding data point becoming more and more important, especially with the delta variant, is the average household size. Many or most delta infections are occurring intra-household and population density matters too.

No where in the US are the unvaccinated safe from the Delta variant and no where in the US are the vaccinated safe from the unvaccinated.
1. When you say "highest vax rate" ...it isn't near the 90% vax rate health officials feel/felt was necessary to protect such communities.
2. When you/they say/report "record surge", I'm guessing you mean for that community. It's not like a Florida or Texas record surge by any means and it's certainly largely among the unvaccinated as well (when looking at their proportion of hospitalization and deaths to their proportion of such population).
3. I'm not gonna peak yet at the state but I'm guessing it's gonna have a Republican Governor or Legislature holding back the reins on population protective measures.

As of yesterday Vermont only had 34,411 covid cases and 323 covid deaths TOTAL throughout the entire pandemic. A "record surge" is nothing....yet and probably won't amount to all that much either. But it is a lot for them and God bless those infected and families losing people but come on, RayB, get some perspective before you post such misleading information.
Vermont is highest vaxed but just at 69.7% no where near the 90% required. Take not of what happens there and consider the ramnifications for states like Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia and even Illinois all still at or less than 50% vaccinated. Will they be more like 43% vaccinated Mississippi leading the country at deaths per million residents?
Vermont was due for an outbreak too. With very few previously infected their vaccination % doesn't get any boost in protection from natural immunity due to previous infections. Where they end up might change these numbers dramatically but as of today they are at only 518 covid deaths/million, by pretty far the lowest in the nation (including Vermont's closest competitors remote Alaska (763) and Hawaii(573)).

Couple things I learned more about the last few days.
Ro Values and their significance.
The original Covid 19 virus out of Wuhan had an Ro between 2 and 3...just slightly larger than the Flu. Later in 2020, the Alpha Variant emerged, probably in England, with an Ro somewhere between 3 and 5. Then the Delta variant emerged with an calculated Ro of 6-7.
Chickenpox has an Ro of 10
Measles has an Ro of 18
HIV/Sars has an Ro of 4
1918 Spanish Flu/Ebola has an Ro of 2
Ro is an estimate of transmission for a virus among an entirely susceptible population under normal circumstances. Governmental measures can have an dramatic effect on these (masks, lockdowns, spacing, etc), but have to get the Ro below 1 to stop an outbreak.
For example, I was watching a very interesting in depth analysis of "what went wrong?" in Australia and how the Delta variant just got out of hand and uncontrollable, despite lockdowns and contact tracing. It was remarkable..they had video footage of an infected person walking in a mall who infected other people that just walked through the same airspace a long time apart. There was no actual contact whatsoever while others in direct contact didn't get sick. However, with the use of lockdowns and such Australia, for a time, were able to contain the Ro value for the Delta virus at just 1.2 for awhile. An Ro of 1.2 just isn't good enough to reverse course and once contact tracing falls behind, it became impossible to stop the infectious variant. So, now Australia has been forced to reexamine its successful strategies to date that had saved thousands and thousands of lives for the initial variants.
The difference between an R0 of three and six is massive. For example, with the original strain of SARS-CoV-2, one person would infect about three people, and each of those people would infect three more. So after only two rounds of transmission, cases would rise by nine (3 x 3 = 9). After three rounds, cases would rise by 27 (3 x 3 x 3 = 27). But with the delta variant, the first person would infect six others, who would each then infect six more people. So after two rounds of transmission, cases would already rise by 36 (6 x 6 = 36). After three rounds, cases would surge by 216 (6 x 6 x 6 = 216).
With an R0 of six or seven, delta will be extremely difficult to slow down unless populations reach high levels of vaccination. And even then surges in cases will still occur, as is now happening in differing parts of the world and U.S.. The vaccine is less than 90% effective at stopping infections with delta, meaning at least 1 in 10 people could have breakthrough infections. And vaccinated people can still spread the virus. In addition, people who aren't vaccinated have a very high risk of infection. Basically....one expert said: "Anyone that chooses not to get vaccinated will in all likelihood get infected by the delta variant over the coming months."

Another concept I read about for the first time today that you'll should be aware of because it's exactly how Sen Ron Johnson was able to lie by implication about the Public Health England delta variant cohort numbers and it's how I hear others twist up numbers and percentages to misstate data to suit their political ideologies and fool the unsuspecting public.

For example, with covid, "age" is a confounding factor. "full vaccination" the exposure, and "severe disease" the outcome, with older people much more likely both to be vaccinated as well as to have severe disease, causing the paradoxical result of vaccine effectiveness appearing much lower when computed overall (67.5% Total in Israeli study) than when computed separately by age groups (91.8% for <50yr, 85.2% for >50yr) thereby illustrating the statistical artifact known as Simpson's Paradox.
If any of you analyzed the Public Health England study Craig and I looked at in detail yesterday...you might more fully understand how this concept messed with the numbers in a cohort with so many individuals (82%) under the age of 50.
It's also this exact type of thing that makes reporting numbers and data to the public so hard. We just don't know how much we don't know and how much the real experts do know.

7.9 Billion people worldwide x .0023 = 18,170,000 deaths (we are currently at 4,550,000 known covid deaths worldwide)
If under 70 case/fatality rate of 0.05%
That's about 7 billion x .0005 = 3,500,000 dead under age 70
With 18,170,000 total dead less 3,500,000 dead under 70 means 14,670,000 or 1.63% of everyone over age 70 would die.
These hospitalizations and deaths wouldn't be guarnateed to stop either. We have no idea how long natural immunity is going to last? What's the fatality rate gonna be on 2nd and 3rd reinfections? What would be the ongoing and reoccuring costs of Covid hospitalizations and disabilities?

Almost all these facts I debunked the last 2 days.
1. That large NY Health System employed 76,000 employees, 74,600 of whom got vaccinated...less than 2% of the entire workforce voluntarily sought other opportunities
2. Henry Ford Health System informed it's employee in June they would be required to be vaccinated by October 1st and about 400 left voluntarily for other opportunities over the last several months.
*there are a shortage of health care workers but more so to the depression nature of trying to save the lives of the uneducated and unvaccinated.
3. Vermont -- saying 76% of all deaths among all age groups violates "Simpson's Paradox" as the very elderly are the most likely to die and only 2.3% of the population over age 75 in Vermont is unvaccinated. Even assuming the 76% number is legitimate, it would mean about 2% of the population that is unvaccinated over age 70 are dying at a rate over 10-12.5 times the rate of the vaccinated.
Further...Vermont has had less covid cases and deaths than every other state in the country. Time may tell but Vermont is very vaccinated so this wave hopefully won't be that anything like a republican covid wave. For example, "only" 4 people died yesterday and there were 127 new cases in Vermont.
4. There has been no evidence whatsoever for "Antibody Dependent Enhancement (ADE). Vaccine induced immunity wanning is a natural phenomenon and completely different than ADE. ADE is always watched for closely with any new vaccine and occurs where a vaccine exhibiting ADE would result in vaccinated people getting more seriously sick, more hospitalizations and dying at greater percentages than unvaccinated persons of the same age and relative health. That has not happened ANYWHERE.
5. The naturalnews Thomas Renz disinformation "study" misinterpreting data provided by governmental entities like DOD/JAIC is completely bogus by reason of "simpson's paradox", only knowing the vaccination status of, as I recall, about 45% of the cohort and then the presumption they made that the rest of the cohort (55% of all the patients over 65) were only 65% vaccinated versus 80-90% vaccinated thereby overestimating the number of vaccinated dead confounded further by overestimating the number of unvaccinated cases that survived.

1. The only reason that Judge can rule it unconstitutional is because the republican nominated Supreme Court in 1973 decided Roe V. Wade and made abortion a constitutionally protected "private matter" that states can not ban.
2. The Texas law didn't actually ban all abortions, it permitted/allowed unfettered early abortion by mail/internet ordered plan B pills that were already being widely distributed throughout the state so every young girl would be poisoning herself and aborting untold numbers of babies without having to really comprehend the consequences of their behavior. In other words, another republican law killing more babies than ever.
3. Texas has already indicated its appealling this district court decision to the conservative 5th circuit court. It's not a dead law...yet, and maybe the 5th Circuit will overturn this district court judge.
4. Either way, but moreso if the 5th Circuit reverses the district court, this case may be taken up by the US Supreme Court and now that Biden is President the Supreme Court, I feel, will be much more likely politically to overturn Roe v Wade and uphold this Texas law. I may not love this Texas law because of the ways such mechanisms would eventually be used against Christians, if it overturns Roe v. Wade, that should make it worth it.
Time will tell and God is sovereign as, truly, only God can end abortion.

The didn't even look at "the latest data" which shows Israel coming out of this wave. Cases are down 50% the past 7 days and deaths this wave were moderate. Even though covid vaccine immunity appears to wane, thousands of deaths were averted by vaccinated.
Further, Sweden isn't riding a natural immunity high, the delta wave really hasn't arrived there yet but hopefully they avoid it due to a vaccination rate of 79% fully vaccinated and 85% who have received at least one dose. With their low household rate that, along with maybe another 5% bump for those still unvaccinated who do have some level of natural immunity, will hopefully be protective enough for the Swedish population to withstand a full out Delat variant assault this cold and flu season.

I read about that kidney transplant case in Colorado, I think.
The long and the short of it is....
After a kidney transplant, you have to take immunosuppressing medication for a long time if not forever.
The evidence to date has revealed the immunosuppressant have a covid mortality rate of 30%.
The immunosuppressant have a tough time getting vaccinated as vaccination is supposed to create a protective immunoresponse. Immunosuppressing medication suppresses that immunoresponse leaving the immunosuppressed unprotected and susceptible to covid (which is much more likely to kill them).
Before a transplant you are required to do many things including quit smoking, quit drinking alcohol and take several other vaccines/vaccine boosters. These requirements have been around for years and the hospital will test for smoking and alcohol and cancel surgeries if you are not compliant.
Doctors, nurses, hospitals and insurance companies don't have to perform miraculous surgeries on destructive people willing to risk their lives and waste everyone's time and efforts based on idiotic anti-vax conspiracy theories.
If you want a transplant, you will be required to do lots of things including getting covid vaccinated.

Luther’s most lasting legacy is his teaching that justification, being made right before a righteous God, is through faith alone.
One passage that was foundational to his teaching is Romans 3:23-26, where the apostle Paul writes: “… For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”
Here Paul presents the good news that our sins are forgiven because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who died for our sins as our substitute. Since no human works can earn God’s forgiveness, then we are justified when we have faith in God’s promise and embrace Christ’s sacrifice for us.
Luther concluded that to be justified, all one has to do is believe in Christ without any corresponding works. He pointed to Paul’s writings in Romans where God promised Abraham descendants in number like the stars in heaven even though Abraham and his wife Sarah were childless and beyond childbearing years. Luther noted that Paul quoted from a passage in Genesis stating, “And he [Abraham] believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness” (Genesis 15:6; quoted in Romans 4:3).
For Luther this was an open-and-shut case: Believe and you are justified. Once justified you are saved. Once you are saved, you remain saved without any influence of works—good or bad.
But Luther had a problem. The New Testament book of James teaches that more is needed for justification than mere belief. James, the half brother of Jesus Christ, wrote: “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, ‘You have faith, and I have works.’ Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! But do you WANT to know, O FOOLISH MAN, that FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD?” (James 2:17-20).
In his Preface to the Epistles of St. James and St. Jude, Luther claimed that the writer of James’ letter is “in direct opposition to St. Paul, and all the rest of the Bible, it ascribes justification to works …” (Martin Luther: Selections from His Writings, John Dillenberger, ed., 1962, p. 35).
And that’s not all James penned that bothered Luther. James wrote: “Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.’ And he was called the friend of God. You see then that a man is justified by works, and NOT BY FAITH ONLY” (James 2:21-24).
Luther Saw Paul And James As Incompatible
“Scripture alone” was one of Luther’s guiding principles, but now he struggled with Scripture when it didn’t meet his understanding. He ultimately branded the epistle of James “an epistle of straw” that he felt like “throwing … into the stove” and wrote that he doubted that it truly belonged in the Bible at all.

Are Paul And James Incompatible?
Luther believed that Paul and James were promoting two different and incompatible ways to be justified. But are they really?
The answer lies in the way both writers used the example of Abraham. Paul was writing to the church in Rome to explain how both Jews and gentiles can come into a relationship with God. Both are justified by God’s grace and faith in the work of Christ. Paul clearly teaches that no one can earn God’s favor because of their good works. Abraham was justified because he believed in God’s promises.
James, however, was dealing with a somewhat different problem. James was addressing the wrong idea that mere belief constitutes living faith. Remember, he wrote that Satan and the demons believe in God and fear His awesome power and glory. James made it clear that our faith must be much more than Satan’s belief! Faith involves completely trusting God, and trusting God is a motivation for obedience.
Think about James’ argument. Abraham believed God’s promise that his son Isaac would give him descendants. Then God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son. God’s promise and command for obedience seemed inconsistent to say the least.
What if Abraham would have said to God: “I believe your promise to give me descendants through Isaac, and since that can’t happen if I sacrifice him, I have decided to disobey you. But I still believe in your promise!”
James argued that if Abraham had refused to obey God, his belief would not have been real faith. If a person truly trusts God, then his actions will be rooted in that trust.
We can’t erase our own sins or impress God enough to earn salvation. We must also not fall into the trap of thinking that belief is all God requires. Faith must submit to God’s working in us. In this submission, real living faith produces works. Paul is correct in teaching that human beings can’t earn justification but must have faith in Christ. James is also correct in teaching that faith without works is dead—useless and empty because it doesn’t really change the person.
Moreover, Paul himself said that “the doers of the law will be justified” (Romans 2:13) —that is, made right before God. We must understand that we receive initial justification from God whenever we repent, apart from any deeds of obedience (Romans 3:28). But remaining justified before God is conditioned upon continuing to actively obey Him. There is NO contradiction!

So if you are Pfizer vaccinated, your spouse, kids, parents, loved ones, friends and neighbors are each 65% less likely to catch it from you than if you remain unvaccinated
It will be interesting to see if that is an average number that doesn’t differentiate on the vaccinated status of the persons around such persons. For example, one breakthrough case comes home to family of 6 who are all vaccinated and transmits to no one and another breakthrough case comes home to unvaccinated family of six and 4 people get it. That’s 4 out of 12 or 30% but clearly the breakthrough to unvaccinated is an issue as well.

Surely you aren't denying Covid exists so what does it matter really if the death count is off a small percentage. Worldwide I believe the death count is likely a vast undercount. It's not like your theory of hospitals getting paid more for covid diagnosis applies in India, Brazil, Russia or China.
Please name the evidence demonstrating the covid vaccine is "going to destroy their immune systme and harm their bodies and eventually kill them".
When doing your own research...talk to your own family doctor, read epidemiologists and real experts in the field of virology and vaccines. New age Chiropractors and anti-vax grifters are not reliable sources for information. They just tell stories and provide undocumented anecdotes anyway.
I'd say talk to my cousin, but he died from Covid after doing his own research along with thousands of others who needlessly died when readily available vaccines would have likely prevented their communities from even spreading covid to them in the first place, let alone alleviated the symptoms and kept the illness from killing them if they did catch covid. Misinformation killed my cousin and it can kill you too. That's a fact...not an opinion. Opinions and facts are not equal.

That’s exactly what I said would happen. Now the US Supreme Ct either has to hear the Texas case and overturn Roe v Wade or find some other technical way to decide the Texas case. Politically it will be The Biden administration appealing the Texas case now that 5th Ciciot has ruled. The Republican Opus Dei Supreme Court can’t politically let Biden admin “win” so, maybe, just maybe Roe v Wade gets overturned just as I predicted a Biden Presidency would cause a year ago. I didn’t say Biden would do it. No President could unilaterally overturn Roe v Wade themself. Only the court can do that and as long as republicans kept dangling the carrot of getting it overturned and winning heretics votes, they would have kept right on with keeping Roe v Wade legal.

What is the chapter and verse where it says I must support/vote for Trump. Trump didn't even have a platform this past election and trusting him to accomplish or do anything he promised is a joke. It's a pretty safe bet you didn't vote for the Mormon agnostic Ardern who was instrumental in bringing about the New Zealand Abortion Legislation Act of March 2020 that decriminalized abortion in New Zealand?
Do you know any Christians that voted for her? Did your kids support her? I don't have any idea what the choices were but it must have been pretty obvious. I can't believe the unmarried Ardern got pregnant in office too. My youngest daughter's friends were all terrified of bringing children into this world while Trump was president. He was kind of a hope killer.

Those corporate emails from last Spring were figuring out how to frame the fact the Pfizer vaccine was tested during development on a very common fetal kidney cell line that almost every single medicine you have ever taken in your life has also been tested on just to make sure the substance isn't toxic to the human cell. This fact was disclosed to regulators in the mountain of paperwork submitted to the government. Otherwise corporations are not obligated to discuss publicly every matter and any question that anybody wants to ask them. It was a matter of public record.
Just hope you are consistent in your religious concern about fetal cell lines and forego shampoos, lipstick, makeup, soap and every medicine ever tested at any time on fetal cell lines.
As a Christian it IS an interesting thing to learn about and be concerned about. It doesn't change anything about the pfizer and moderna vaccines but other vaccines and the fact those cell lines are all used in so many different way is something to be concerned about as a Christian.

Pardon my American, but it is finally necessary to write about bullshit. In 2005 the American philosopher Harry G. Frankfurt wrote a book entitled On Bullshit. He characterised bullshit by saying that it is not simply telling lies, or misrepresenting the truth, but having a lack of interest in the truth. The bullshitter may tell the truth, or may lie, but, either way, who cares, that is not his primary concern. His primary concern is to say something which will achieve some other thing which is not obviously evident from the words themselves – amusing everyone, perhaps, or scaring everyone, or simply getting on, climbing the greasy pole, or securing a contract.
Of course, every utterance has some other significance or importance to us besides its propositional content. The English philosopher J.L. Austin in the 1960s noticed that statements have ‘illocutionary’ content as well as ‘locutionary’ content: that is to say, each statement has something which is intended to be done in saying it as well as something which is actually expressed in the thing said. If I am to explain bullshit in these terms, then the bullshitter is someone who is only concerned with the illocutionary content. In fact, the bullshitter lives in an illocutionary world. Yet when the bullshitter speaks, his words obviously also, alas, have locutionary content, posit truth and falsity, and we all – if this bullshitter has any authority over us – have to speak as if certain locutions are true and others false. In other words, we are caught up in a bullshit world: and the one thing we are not allowed to do is say that the emperor has no clothes. As long as we perpetuate the bullshit of the bullshitter we can live in this world; if we have any concern with truth and falsity it becomes harder to live.
Is this not a clue to what has happened in the COVID-19 pandemic?
Frankfurt commented that bullshit is “closer to bluffing, surely, than to telling a lie”. When one bluffs one does not engage in ‘falsity’ but in ‘fakery’. He wrote: “Although it is produced without concern with the truth, it need not be false”, and, perhaps I should add, for Frankfurt did not quite say this, bullshit apes the truth. What I mean is that bullshit comes into a world of propositions which are generally true or false, and so operates in amongst them: and so seems to offer truths. Frankfurt wrote: “The bullshitter is faking things. But this does not mean he necessarily gets them wrong”. This makes arguing with a bullshitter much harder than arguing with a liar. With a liar, one argues against the locution, one argues against the proposition, one argues for truth. But with a bullshitter, one may find oneself, if one is incautious, arguing against someone who is right, who is speaking the truth. (This is the snare which ‘conspiracy theorists’ fall into, or are supposed to fall into.) When one argues against someone who has lied, one can condemn the lie without condemning the liar. But when one argues against a bullshitter – and, again, Frankfurt did not say anything about this – one has to argue ad hominem. The proposition may be true, it may be false; but it is the proposer who is the bullshitter. He or she is the fake. One has to make it personal.
Bullshit is obviously essential to politics. Consider the following description, in effect, of a politician: “The bullshitter may not deceive us, or even intend to do so, either about the facts or about what he takes the facts to be. What he does necessarily attempt to deceive us about is his enterprise. His only indispensably distinctive characteristics is that in a certain way he misrepresents what he is up to”. The consequence of the existence of bullshit, of this trading in truth or perhaps untruth in a careless but extremely purposeful manner, is that it creates a bullshit world. Truth has never mattered much in politics. Much is symbol, or magic, or illusion. Consider ‘representation’ for instance: it is nothing but symbol, magic and illusion. Consider crown, unction, sceptre, sword, wig, robe, and the ultimate English bullshit of the phrase ‘My right honourable friend’. Voltaire famously said that the Holy Roman Empire was not holy, not Roman and not an empire. In the same way, our ‘right honourable friend’ is not right, not honourable and not our friend. I jest, so let us quote Frankfurt again: “Bullshit is unavoidable whenever circumstances require someone to talk without knowing what he is talking about.” Again, and in the spirit of being generous to politicians, this is eminently political. For politics, certainly parliamentary and deliberative and consultative and counselling politics, involves everyone talking about things they know nothing about: the future, or the facts. Bertrand de Jouvenel brilliantly defined politics as being whatever is left over when the engineers, technocrats and experts have solved all our problems. He defined politics as being composed of problems which cannot be solved but only settled, through compromise and accommodation, and, we might add, in a less decorous age than Jouvenel’s, by bluster, balderdash and bullshit.
Frankfurt thought the bullshitter is worse than the liar. “It is impossible for someone to lie unless he thinks he knows the truth. Producing bullshit requires no such conviction. A person who lies is thereby responding to the truth, and he is to that extent respectful of it.” Telling lies does not mean one loses one’s grasp of the truth; but bullshitting does. Therefore, “bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are”. Frankfurt was a philosopher and so perhaps understandably grim about this. Philosophers are concerned with truth. But we can reflect more calmly that since there has always been politics there has always been bullshit.
This is not the problem. The problem is the scale of the bullshit.
Part II
In 2018 the American anthropologist David Graeber wrote a book entitled Bullshit Jobs. A ‘bullshit job’ is a job which has no content, no point, makes no contribution to anything: jobs like consultant, advisor, manager, administrator. O tempora, O mores! Graeber suggested that such jobs have three characteristics. First, they are pointless. Second, part of the job is to pretend that they are not pointless, unnecessary or pernicious. And third, the people carrying out the jobs know that they are pointless. Graeber’s definition of a bullshit job is amusing. It is “a form of paid employment that is so completely pointless that even the employee cannot justify its existence, even though they feel obliged to pretend this is not the case”. There is a problem with this definition though. For a start, though what Graeber called a bullshit job is a pointless job, it is a job which appears to ask the employee to lie about it. So, strictly speaking, it is not a job which involves bullshit in Frankfurt’s sense.
This is because bullshit, as Frankfurt showed, is not lying and is not pointless talk. Rather bullshit is talk which misdirects the listener as to what the actual point is. It is apparently pointed talk (where the apparent point is about some objective situation, ‘x’ concealing the actual point (which is about some subjective interest, ‘y’). Bullshit is natural for politicians, therefore, since most politicians have to continually engage in misdirection. (For example, take the favoured phrase of recent times, “Policy, not politics”: repeated by politicians continually even though their interest is always more likely to be the politics than policy.)
Another American philosopher, Raymond Geuss, in his recent book A Philosopher Looks at Work (2021), has adjusted Graeber’s definition, probably because he, Geuss, is more philosophically sensitive than Graeber, less concerned with publishing a best-selling work, and also more aware of Graeber’s problematic use of the term bullshit.
Geuss drops Graeber’s third characteristic of a bullshit job – that the person doing the job knows the job is pointless. As far as Geuss is concerned, a bullshit job is pointless, but it is likely that the person doing it does not think this, or does not think it for very long. By taking this step, Geuss brings Graeber’s concept of a bullshit job closer to bullshit in Frankfurt’s sense. The adjusted definition of a bullshit job “includes even pointless, unnecessary, or pernicious jobs that people who perform think are highly useful, which they might actually enjoy doing, and with which they might even strongly identify”. Geuss adds: “This immediately raises the issue, which for Graeber doesn’t arise at all: how I can justify claiming that something which some people enjoy doing – those who like their bullshit jobs – and other people are willing to pay to have done – the employers who create and fund the bullshit jobs – is actually or objectively pointless and useless?”
Geuss’s correction to Graeber is of course a loss to the clarity of Graeber’s picture. Graeber has a picture of people doing emphatically pointless things while claiming to be doing things with a point, even though they know this is not the case. They are liars, not bullshitters, because they know their jobs are pointless. Geuss prefers to see people with bullshit jobs as being involved not in a lie but in bullshit. With Geuss’s adjustment, any complacency that we have that we do not have bullshit jobs is thoroughly and alarmingly exploded. Beware, dear reader: you too may have a bullshit job. It is possible for us to read Graeber’s book, and say, “I believe in the point of my job, ergo I do not have a bullshit job.” (Consider all the encomiums from Owen Jones and the like, secure in the sense that they do not have a bullshit job – and why? Because they know they are not liars. To which the response is: “No, Owen Jones, you are not a liar, but you may be a bullshitter.”) But it is not possible to read Geuss’s book this way. No doubt this is one reason why far fewer people will read, or even like, Geuss’s book. For what he is saying is that believing that your job is not a bullshit job does not prevent it from being a bullshit job.
What is Graeber’s definition of a bullshit job as adjusted by Geuss? Graeber’s original definition was that a bullshit job is a form of paid employment that is so completely pointless that even the employee cannot justify its existence, even though they feel obliged to pretend this is not the case. With the Geuss adjustment, the second and third clauses cancel each other out. The employee probably can justify the job, and so does not feel obliged to pretend anything. The employee has overcome any cognitive dissonance and so may go on to enjoy their bullshit job which is, therefore, not bullshit at all (in Graeber’s sense), though it is very evidently still a bullshit job (in Geuss’s sense), and emphatically so because it is involves bullshit (in Frankfurt’s sense). The adjusted definition of a bullshit job is therefore a form of paid employment that is so completely pointless that the employee has to bullshit in order to justify not only the job but also him- or herself.

With all this literature parsed, let us consider the current situation. The emergence of a novel virus and its attendant disease in humans, COVID-19, has been a black comedy of vast proportions. For the first time in world history, bullshit is universal. We are all – at last – speaking one language. It is not the language of law, or rights, or justice, or religion. Nay, it is the language of survival. But it is not real survival. It is apparent survival. And because it is not real, it is beyond truth and lies. The whole crisis has taken place in a beyond, a world of bullshit, in which people who do not care about the truth speak as if they are even more concerned with the truth than everyone else for a whole set of reasons of their own.
Let me be clear, and repeat what Frankfurt says. Bullshitters may tell the truth. They often do tell the truth. The virus does something. Vaccines certainly do something. But lockdown is basically bullshit. Masks are, by and large, bullshit: a consequence of it, a cause of it. Mandating vaccines is certainly bullshit. ‘Fact-checking’ is a clever way of avoiding admitting that bullshit is ubiquitous by drawing ostentatious attention to the truths uttered by bullshitters. We all know, for instance, that a truth out of context is bullshit. Statistics are often an important element of bullshit. Models are one form of academic bullshit. Behavioural science is another. We all know that when the Guardian says “Ivermectin is horse de-wormer”, it is not lying. Certainly not. But what the Guardian is doing is engaging in an amusing and alarming form of redescription which implies a lack of concern with the truth – the truth that ivermectin may be a highly beneficial treatment – and hence that it is bullshitting. (One wonders whether anyone will ever pay for ‘bullshit-checking’ websites.)
It is in this context that I think that it is important to offer a further definition, on top of Frankfurt’s definition of bullshit and Geuss’s improved definition of a bullshit job. The current crisis has only come to be what it is because of the number of people who have what we should call bullshitting jobs. A bullshitting job may or may not be a bullshit job. A bullshit job is only bullshit in so far as the person with the job has to bullshit in order to justify the job. A bullshitting job, by contrast, may be a worthy one – for instance, the job of Prime Minister – but is one which involves, in modern times, and especially in our exact times, the spewing out of vast streams of bullshit. And this bullshit is worse than the bullshit of a person with a bullshit job, because this bullshit covers everyone. It repaints the world. Some of the most important people in society have bullshitting jobs: politicians, journalists, modellers, advisors, administrators, and academics. Experts. Some initiate the flow of bullshit, the formers of opinion, and others maintain and perpetuate it, the repeaters of opinion: and they maintain it by not caring about the truth while all too ostentatiously caring about something which is aping the truth – for which our current word, laughably, is science.
The coincidence of everyone in bullshitting jobs spewing out the same bullshit means we have lived for 18 months in a world of bullshit. This is unique in world history. We have had religions and ideologies with ambitions to conquer the world. But nothing ever united everyone everywhere from Communist China to Capitalist United States of America until we arrived at the spectacular, beguiling, frustrating, all-encompassing world of bullshit which is the world entirely conjugated and declined, entirely constrained and mandated, by an innocent virus.
