Sadly, it appears that Barbara Marx Hubbard's faction of American nuns may have won this war as it is now reported that the Vatican investigation of American nuns has ended with an "olive branch" toward them and no disciplinary action nor even strong disapproval voiced towards past obvious anti-Christ, anti-God the Father statements made by them. You might want to reread my stories on "Little Sisters of the New World Religion." Sadly it appears that too many of the American nuns have gone that direction. It is further obvious that times will be much more difficult for faithful American nuns truly keeping the faith of their fathers.
That's not all that is bothering me. Reportedly, the current Pope celebrated Earth Day with a proclamation that "The Earth is the Source of all life for all the human Family." Reportedly, he is on the verge of issuing an Encyclical on the issue of "global warming." If that happens, it is discouragingly ominous news to Yours Truly.
Following the incubation and progress of "Earth day" and its "ecologizers" as I have over more than three decades, it is impossible not to see that they are headed in the direction of earth worship and then "universe worship" -- giving credit to all but the good Lord who made it and us. Mary Jo Anderson (a Catholic writer) and I had talks about it in the past and she agreed with my analysis: Earth Worship was definitely where they were headed.
When Catholic scripture readings are given that encompass the Book of Revelation, which happens from time to time, Revelation 14 is among them. Those passages promise severe punishment for those who worship the "beast and his image." The more I have studied the New Age Movement, the more I am coming to believe is that the "image of the beast" is the "Image of the Whole Earth."
It is difficult to hear Pope Francis say "The Earth is the source of all life . . ." I hope he reviews and revises that statement.
Stay tuned!

ReplyDeleteWhat does it say about:
Jesus SERVING the Mahdi when he returns?
What does it say about Jesus helping destroy all religions that are not of true Islam?
What does it say about Muslims not believing it was Christ on the cross, but rather Simon of Cyrene, and that Christ never died and rose from the dead?
That's what the Quran teaches.
I don't care if they recognize Abraham as the father of their religion.
Since Jesus is God made flesh, a Muslim would be denying the Creator.
They don't worship the same Creator that I do.
Hi anon 6:06, anon 4:09 here... I totally agree with you!

ReplyDeleteYou have to watch this. It dovetails with your research:

My understanding is that the Pope will be taking a stand at the UN against global warming when he comes in the Fall.
Not singling out the Pope here, although he is an important figure, but he's not the only one who is pushing this agenda:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.oikoumene.org/en/what-we-do/climate-change
The Pope came out last week in support of global governance.
ReplyDeleteThe Catechism of the Catholic Church also includes a statement that members of the church not only become like Christ, they actually become Christ.
Evangelicals are stepping all over each other to see who can embrace the Pope first and join hands in this unholy, unbiblical heresy that he promotes in the name of Christian unity.
True Believers in Jesus will need to tenaciously hold fast to biblical truth as the church moves toward heresy and turns its back on true believers. Those who don't emerse themselves in God's Word and have a strong personal relationship with Him will have an impossible time standy against the flood.

I strongly disagree with the writer saying the Catholics don't worship the same God as we do. For the most part, they do, except for the gnostic, New Age Catholics who are out there in that sphere, just as they sometimes are in Evangelical circles, e.g. Rodney Romney, the now deceased Seattle American Baptist Church pastor who was clearly and deeply into just about every facet of the New Age, Theosophy and all.

With respect, such gnostic / New Age Catholics must include those who would include such gnostic twistings such as 841 into their doctrine , as cited above.
This therefore begs the question: should any Christian follow the RC Catechism? The answer, due to its obvious gnosticism and blasphemy is surely no.

I understand CC460, and it is identical to the Orthodox Christian belief of theosis or "sanctification" of Lutheran profession.
ReplyDeleteTo partake in the devine nature requires us to be a "shadow of the higher dimensionally masculinity" of God, specifically as a man or woman. For men, this means being a warrior poet and for women it means being a mother.
In other words, King David was a partaker of the diving nature by being a "man after God's own heart" or a warrior poet. The Virgin Mary was a partaker of divine nature of being the Theotokos, or a mother.
In contrast, Adam and Eve grasped the godhood and acted like gods - by eating the fruit, probably a contraceptive or abortifact - and missed the divine nature entirely. In everyday we can see men and women acting like gods and goddesses, conquering and being conquered with a general hatred toward humanity.
The devine nature of God is the opposite - fully embracing life in the proper gender roles. CC460 and Orthodox doctrine is in line with this thinking, and to a lessor extant Lutheranism is as well.
Eco-Fascism and/or Eco-Nazi has been on the march ever since I discovered the existence of the larger New Age Movement of which they are a part and very long before that.

catholicism, try as it did under constantine to bring christianity into mainstream civilization, never completely purged all the greco-roman paganism. The historic shananigans of the catholic church, as a matter of popular witness, should be enough for any follower of Jesus Christ to recognize: this "church" is lost, and to entertain any part of it is welcoming apostacy.

ReplyDeleteThe action of these wolves do not, in turn, mean that the Catholic faith in general was lost.
ReplyDeleteHowever, from the 16th century it does appear that the world descended into the "troubled times" of the very last days.
It turns out that the the fundamentalist pastor of the 1980s who claimed the rapture would take place in the next three years was in fact way, way too late in declaring the end. It was not the "evil empire" of 1983 that ushered in the final days. No, it was the Portuguese using sea routes, Henry VII, Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, and that all important document the Peace of Westphalia that signaled the latter days had arrived.

Dave in CA @ 2:54 AM -------- You are right on target.
ReplyDeleteRegarding CC460:
ReplyDeleteThe portion with a footnote reference 80 is citing Athanasius’ work De Incarnatione Verbi (On the Incarnation of the Word). Here’s the latter part in Koine Greek:
ίνα ημείς θεοποιηθώμεν, which is transliterated ina emeis theopoiethomen, and means:
in order that | we | could be made God
The key is in parsing the last word, which is a compound verb (also, verbs encode person and number):
Θεοποιηθώμεν (theopoiethomen) = aorist (verb type), first person plural, active, subjunctive mood/mode, accusative case (direct object); with subjunctive mood meaning could, might.
= theo – poie – thomen, God – makes/creates – could be
Which I think is better translated “in order that we could be made God”.
The first person plural refers to believers (we); the active voice means that we are the actor; the subjunctive mood here, given that it’s in a subordinate clause makes it a “purpose” clause, which refers to the main clause “Christ became man”, i.e. incarnate [purpose}}] “in order that we could be made God”.
Of course, we must understand that the active voice here reflects the fact that we must actively allow the Spirit to work in and through us – not that through our own self-effort we can attain divinity. In other words, by actively submitting to the Holy Spirit, we become sanctified, or as the EO prefers to call this process: theosis
From this EO board is the following explanation (see 2nd comment by “ozgeorge”):
“The word ‘theopoiethomen’ carries the meaning of ‘creation’ or ‘making something which didn't exist before’. We are ‘made’ God, that is, it is an action of God. St. Athanasius is not saying that we automatically ‘become’ God because of the Incarnation, but rather, because of the Incarnation, it is now possible for us to be made God through the process of Theosis.”
In my last post, scratch the bit about the accusative case (direct object), as that's not correct! Sorry!
ReplyDeleteThe rest is fine.
Regarding CC841, I also take issue with it like the others above. I’ve no problem at all with 839 and 840, which have to do with the Jews, as this is adequately backed up with Scripture.
ReplyDeleteHere’s 841 again, so that I can illustrate my issues:
841 The Church's relationship with the Muslims. "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day."
Islam may well profess “the faith of Abraham”, but they do not acknowledge the Creator and Judge.
Jesus Christ, the Son is referred to as “the firstborn over all creation” (Col 1:15), and “for by him all things were created…all things were created by him and for him” (Col 1:16) and “through whom (the Son) he (God) made the universe” (Hebrews 1:2). “He is before all things…” (Col 1:17).
As pointed out above, Islam denies the Son, and hence, the Creator. Also, see Genesis 1:26: “Let Us make man in our own image…” which includes the Spirit (see Gen 1:2).
Moreover, Jesus is declared Judge (John 5:22), both current (John 5:24-25) and eschatological Judge (John 5:27-29) in concert with the Father (John 5:30).
Also, CC 526 ties in with both my preceding posts on the Catechism. In this are the following words, which are sung on the evening of the first day of each year:
ReplyDeleteO marvelous exchange! Man's Creator has become man, born of the Virgin. We have been made sharers in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share our humanity.
1) It affirms that we share in Christ's divinity in virtue of the Incarnation, correlating with CC 460. Again, this refers to sanctification, not self-deification.
However, on the flip side:
2) It appears to conflict with the assertion regarding Muslims in CC841, as it affirms Christ as Creator, while Muslims explicitly deny Christ as Deity/Creator.
1) It affirms that we share in "Christ's divinity in virtue of the Incarnation, correlating with CC 460. Again, this refers to sanctification, not self-deification."
ReplyDeleteNot divine in and of ourselves but indwelt by His Divine Spirit and made partakers of the divine nature as in John 17: 21-24.
One day *like* Him (awake in His likeness) and one day forever with Him.
Anon 8:30,
ReplyDeleteI was thinking more along the lines of 2 Peter 1:4 which is specifically referenced in CC460 (at ftnt 78). This is clearly a reference to the partaking of the Spirit, i.e., the indwelling Spirit (see "divine power" of 1:3), and the attributes of verses 5-9 is a cross-reference to the fruit of the Spirit/acts of sinful nature of Galatians 5:16-26.
Yes, Craig we are agreed.
ReplyDeleteSanctification and not self-deification.
Unfortunately, there are some in "Protestant" (using that very loosely) circles who DO use 2 Peter 1:4 to reference self-deification. I'm also reminded of Matthew Fox.
ReplyDeleteI know some do think that. That is the Ken Copeland type I believe.
ReplyDeleteTerrible abuse of Scripture.
"In contrast, Adam and Eve grasped the godhood and acted like gods - by eating the fruit, probably a contraceptive or abortifact - and missed the divine nature entirely."
ReplyDeleteA contraceptive? That is an odd theory. I always thought the fruit was high technology, which can lead to immortality (perhaps a type of trans-humanism, deathless but without a judgment).
This tech can be used for good or evil purposes.
Imagine yourself in the garden, as the woman preferably. You have only life ahead of you, every pleasure available, and the entire world to explore. God gave two commands, a negative command and positive command. The first was to not eat from the certain tree, and the second was to multiply and fill the earth with people.
ReplyDeleteFor two people who could do anything and had no passage of time to give them worry, only one thing might have been a temptation to Eve.
Could it have been possible to travel and explore the world with Adam while carrying children? Why not put off the multiplying of children for a little while, what would it hurt? The pomegranate provides contraceptives to both the female and male. She ate, and then gave some to Adam, then drank the nectar of the gods and either prevented a child or aborted the tiny baby in Eve's womb.
Adam and Eve already were in no danger of aging. They had no need to eat a fruit for long life. No, the fruit was useful for purely selfish reasons. Eve was selfish for not wanting to care for children, and Adam was a coward for not standing up to Eve.

I think everybody is reading more into the Adam & Eve story than God intended and much of what I see above is pure speculation -- some of it reminding me of Unification Church stories. NOT GOOD.
ReplyDeleteThe point of the disobedience was that God said, "DON'T". The whole thing in my opinion was OBEDIENCE TO GOD and TRUST IN GOD. Adam & Eve weren't smart enough to second guess our Creator and neither are we!
Constance

ReplyDelete"According to the NEW AMERICAN, a group of scientists are on their way to Rome to try to dissuade the Pope from listening to defective "scientific" information."
ReplyDeleteGood! Here follows my summary of the issue.
Physicist
Over global warming the science outranks the politics. And in science the data outrank the theory. The world has not got warmer for some 15 years now even though China and India continue to industrialise and raise the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration. Even those committed to the dangerous-warming scenario speak of a pause, which they cannot confidently attribute to any cause, while the satellite data are even clearer. Satellite data are more reliable than the terrestrial data preferred by most scientists, because satellites can look down on the whole earth in one go.
What’s going on? In a dry atmosphere the warming effect of a given amount of carbon dioxide is not hard to calculate. It was first done by Arrhenius about a century ago. In a moist atmosphere like the earth’s, however, in which evaporation and condensation move heat around and cloud can reflect more solar radiation into space, the calculation is so difficult that the best computer models still involve – frankly – guesswork. It is far from clear whether water vapour enhances or mitigates the warming effect of carbon dioxide, but the models used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change insist that it amplifies it by a factor of about 3. That is why the IPCC – run for the previous 12 years by an Indian railway expert – cries thermageddon. The debate has been shifted from "global warming" to "climate change", with the effect of suggesting that all climate change is manmade. This is nonsense: there have been plenty of cycles in the earth's climate in the centuries and millennia before the Industrial Revolution set carbon dioxide levels on the rise (and, although there are winners and losers in every change, it is overall better for mankind when the earth warms; we were nearly wiped out in the last Ice Age). Furthermore changes of climate might be merely local not global – whatever the media might say in any locale.
I am not suggesting that the majority of climate physicists are corrupt. There are many subtle selection mechanisms operating in the sociology of science capable of explaining why they mostly back the wrong horse. But there is no scientific consensus, and it is a falsehood that there is. Also there is clearly improper manipulation of some historic terrestrial data that has the effect of exaggerating the warming; google “Paraguay temperature record scam” for an example. Data are sacrosanct in science, and if ‘corrections’ have been applied then how and why they have been calculated need to be explicit.
Cont'd...

ReplyDeleteWe do need to curb our carbon usage over the long term, if only because oil will eventually run out and it is better not to be in hock to Islamic regimes. But there is no cause for panic and I suggest that we frack for oil and gas while nuclear fusion power is developed. (Nuclear fusion is fundamentally different from nuclear fission, which all reactors to date have been – although even fission is now promising new reactors that are safer and leave less radioactive waste.) Meanwhile we can continue to search for a decent way of storing energy so as to buffer between natural supply from solar, tidal etc, and human demand, when it is cold, dark etc. But if we continue to close down fossil fuel power plants without going nuclear or fracking, power cuts will become common in a few years. Wind turbines should not be contemplated, for they produce only small amounts of energy at high expense and wreck our landscape. They are popular only with those who wish to harvest the subsidies they come with, which are driving up the cost of electricity and causing the poor to go cold in winter.
As for the politics, the Green movement is a direct descendant of the 19th century Romantic movement that grumbled about the Industrial Revolution – whose fruits permit even the poor today in our culture to have a higher material standard of living than mediaeval kings. Greens wish to return us to a pastoral idyll that never existed. Life working the land was terribly harsh – so harsh that people freely quit it to work in those grim factories. In global warming, politicians see an excuse to raise taxes that would empower them by having more money to play with; bankers see a market in carbon credits to take commission from; and the Third World sees the chance of money for nothing – although an international carbon tax would merely transfer wealth from the poor in rich countries to the rich in poor countries. Ottmar Edenhofer, the co-chairman of one of the IPCC’s working groups, stated in a candid interview in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung newspaper (November 14th, 2010) that: “we redistribute de facto the world’s wealth by climate policy… one has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy. This has almost nothing to do with environmental policy anymore.”
I hope that those scientists heading to Rome will get Pope Francis' attention. Is it know whether anybody in the Vatican liaised with them?

Here's the New American article:
ReplyDeleteScientists' Message to Pope: Be Skeptical of Climate Change Alarm
A team of independent climate scientists and public policy experts is traveling to Rome to enlighten Pope Francis about climate science in advance of the Vatican's April 28 environmental conference. They plan to host two public workshops to explain that there is no global warming crisis and to discourage the pontiff from relying on faulty information from climate alarmists within the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
"Sadly, the pope is aligning himself with a U.N. agenda that will limit development for billions of the world's desperately poor residents," says Marc Morano, former communications director for the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and founder of the watchdog website Climate Depot. Morano is one of the policy experts slated to speak at the workshops scheduled on Monday, April 27 and Tuesday, April 28 in Rome. He explains, "The pope has been misled on climate science, and his promotion of the U.N. agenda will only mean the poor will be the biggest victims of climate change policies."
Scientists with The Heartland Institute, a think tank promoting scientific skepticism about man-made global warming, will join Morano to promote the same message. "Humans are not causing a climate crisis on God's Green Earth — in fact, they are fulfilling their Biblical duty to protect and use it for the benefit of humanity," said Heartland Institute President Joseph Bast. "The world's poor will suffer horribly if reliable energy — the engine of prosperity and a better life — is made more expensive and less reliable by the decree of global planners..."
"If Pope Francis embraces the Climate Change agenda, he will be aligning himself with the biggest enemies of the Church and of Catholic moral principles," warns Morano. "These activists are pro-population control and have bought into 'population bomb' hype."

ReplyDeleteGreat post. You hit it right on the head.
Today’s Post:
ReplyDeleteIt’s good to know that ISIL—Islamic State of Syria, Iraq and the Levant—are just a JV TEAM! It’s reassuring to realize that the guys in charge of our country understand the geo-political climate and acting in accordance with our constitution, are protecting our borders….NOT!
I have posted to many times on the porous-southern-border-issue to count, but as of this post in 2015 the FEDERAL Government has still not closed the Southern border, it remains porous. Those who have a will and desire to do so, can cross it and enter into our country illegally.
I recently spoke with someone who is in law enforcement, specifically in regard to narcotics and drug trafficking. We discussed the porous southern border, the drug cartels, the ongoing drug-related murders throughout Mexico, and Central America. He told me that law enforcement was aware of ISIL’s presence in Mexico, just miles from the US border. The threat is real but is being down-played by our media, instead we know everything there is to know about Bruce Jenner! (Pray for him)
jh-15-map-2Here’s something to think about. There’s been a lot of talk about JADE HELM, the so-called training exercise slated to happen this summer. Is it possible Jade Helm is an exercise based on INTEL that has informed our government that ISIL is set to create havoc throughout certain sections of the US?
The map to the left shows where the Jade Helm exercise will take place. Basically, it’s training in response for what might come across the southern border.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2015/03/31/why-the-new-special-operations-exercise-freaking-out-the-internet-is-no-big-deal/
ISIL has committed genocide and continues its unmitigated rampage in Iraq and other areas of the Middle East and parts of Africa. They have destroyed antiquities, raped countless women, destroyed Christian churches, and killed thousands of innocent people. Now, they are just over our southern border.
Saudi WallThe Saudi Arabian government is constructing a barricade to keep ISIL out. They apparently are taking ISIL seriously and they have the will to protect their borders.
I have posted here that the malls and schools in the USA are soft targets. In other words—God forbid!—it would take limited resources to create havoc in our country.
Those who fight for ISIL are committed Jihadist’s, as they are willing to die for what they believe. Being a martyr—dying for Allah—is what many of these misguided Jihadist’s strive to attain.
In closing todays post. I’ll go out on a limb here and state that Jade Helm and the threat of ISIL may be a deliberate manipulation to declare Martial law in the USA. In other words, there will be an event—ISIL creating havoc in several states at once, in a coordinated fashion. Then the response—to protect the US citizens—Martial law.
Of course what should have happened years ago is a border fence, like the Saudi’s are busy building. A secure fence on our southern border would keep the drug traffic, illegal aliens and now ISIL out of the country.

Figueres: First time the world economy is transformed intentionally
3 February 2015 - The Top UN Climate Change Official is optimistic that a new international treaty will be adopted at Paris Climate Change conference at the end of the year. However the official, Christiana Figueres, the Executive Secretary of UNFCCC, warns that the fight against climate change is a process and that the necessary transformation of the world economy will not be decided at one conference or in one agreement.
"This is probably the most difficult task we have ever given ourselves, which is to intentionally transform the economic development model, for the first time in human history", Ms Figueres stated at a press conference in Brussels.
"This is the first time in the history of mankind that we are setting ourselves the task of intentionally, within a defined period of time to change the economic development model that has been reigning for at least 150 years, since the industrial revolution. That will not happen overnight and it will not happen at a single conference on climate change, be it COP 15, 21, 40 - you choose the number. It just does not occur like that. It is a process, because of the depth of the transformation."
Lima Draft
The so called 'Lima draft', which was adopted in December 2014 at the UN Climate Conference in Lima (Peru) will be subject of further negotiations by members states, starting in Geneva next week. Two rounds of negotiations are expected before the Climate Change Conference convenes in Paris in December.
The current draft is 39 pages including options, sub-options and brackets. The negotiators in Geneva have until 13 February to "manage and streamline" the draft. According to Ms Figueres, there are a lot of differences now in comparison to the run up to the Copenhagen Summit on Climate Change in 2009, during which a successor treaty to the Kyoto protocol on limiting CO2 emissions was last attempted. She pointed out that with one year to go there already is a draft, whereas there was none until the start of the Copenhagen Summit.
[cont]
[cont]
ReplyDeleteFour goals
Figueres, however, pointed out that the legal treaty is only one of four important parts of the process. In addition to the treaty, there are the current Climate Change actions from now and until 2020, the financing packages and the so-called Intended National Determined Contributions (INDCs). These are the actions that countries intend to take under a global agreement from 2020 and have to be publicly outlined before the start of the conference. It is expected that all major economies will deliver their plans in time: the US, China, and the European Union have already shown their cards.
Maximum level of ambition
Ms Figueres went on to say that the sum total of the national contributions are not expected to be enough to limit the increase of world temperature to 2ºC.
"That is not a discovery, that is not a breaking news item. We need to get to the maximum level of ambition of collective INDCs because what we are going to have to do all of the time is to close the gap between what science tells us where we have to be and where we actually are….But the point is will we be at the end destination? I would argue, yes."
Christiana Figueres was appointed as the new Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2010, and was reappointed for a second three year term in July 2013.

Eyebrow raising article on The Pontifical Academy of Sciences site:
ReplyDeleteStatement of the Joint PAS/PASS Workshop on Sustainable Humanity, Sustainable Nature: Our Responsibility
Stabilizing the Climate and Giving Energy Access to All with an Inclusive Economy
…However, just as humanity confronted “Revolutionary Change” (Rerum Novarum) in the Age of Industrialization in the 19th century, today we have changed our natural environment to such an extent that scientists are redefining the current period as the Age of the Anthropocene, that is to say an age when human action, through the use of fossil fuels, is having a decisive impact on the planet. If current trends continue, this century will witness unprecedented climate changes and ecosystem destruction that will severely impact us all.
Human action which is not respectful of nature becomes a boomerang for human beings that creates inequality and extends what Pope Francis has termed “the globalization of indifference” and the “economy of exclusion” (Evangelii Gaudium), which themselves endanger solidarity with present and future generations.
The advances in measured productivity in all sectors – agriculture, industry and services – enable us to envision the end of poverty, the sharing of prosperity, and the further extensions of life spans. However, unfair social structures (Evangelii Gaudium) have become obstacles to an appropriate and sustainable organization of production and a fair distribution of its fruits, which are both necessary to achieve those goals…

ReplyDeleteThe massive fossil fuel use at the heart of the global energy system deeply disrupts the Earth’s climate and acidifies the world’s oceans. The warming and associated extreme weather will reach unprecedented levels in our children’s life times and 40% of the world’s poor, who have a minimal role in generating global pollution, are likely to suffer the most. Industrial-scale agricultural practices are transforming landscapes around the world, disrupting ecosystems and threatening the diversity and survival of species on a planetary scale. Yet even with the unprecedented scale and intensity of land use, food insecurity still stalks the planet, with one billion people suffering from chronic hunger and another billion or so suffering from the hidden hunger of micronutrient deficiencies. Tragically, a third of the produced food is wasted, which as Pope Francis said is “like stealing from the table of the poor and the hungry”.
In view of the persistence of poverty, the widening of economic and social inequalities, and the continued destruction of the environment, the world’s governments called for the adoption by 2015 of new universal goals, to be called Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to guide planetary-scale actions after 2015. To achieve these goals will require global cooperation, technological innovations that are within reach, and supportive economic and social policies at the national and regional levels, such as the taxation and regulation of environmental abuses, limits to the enormous power of transnational corporations and a fair redistribution of wealth. It has become abundantly clear that Humanity’s relationship with Nature needs to be undertaken by cooperative, collective action at all levels – local, regional, and global.

Dear Craig at 8:42pm,
ReplyDeleteYes indeed! They also have a Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, where in the example below we see it implied that Islam may be regarded as pure truth, as may other religions. This is wishy-washy neo-liberalism; it encourages those caught up in or tempted by such false religions to eat of such deadly fruit rather than sharing the Good News of the Holy Gospel and proclaiming boldly that only Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life and that no man comes to the Father but by Him! :
Declaration by the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue
Make space for dialogue with Muslims, now more than ever
22 April 2015
“The events of recent times cause many of us to ask: 'Is there still space for dialogue with Muslims?'. The answer is: yes, more than ever. Firstly because the great majority of Muslims themselves do not identify with the current acts of barbarism. Unfortunately today the word 'religious' is often associated with the word 'violence', whereas believers must demonstrate that religions are required to be heralds of peace and not violence.
To kill in the name of religion is not only an offence to God, but it is also a defeat for humanity. On 9 January 2006 Pope Benedict XVI, addressing the Diplomatic Corps and speaking about the danger of clashes between civilisations and in particular organised terrorism, affirmed that 'No situation can justify such criminal activity, which covers the perpetrators with infamy, and it is all the more deplorable when it hides behind religion, thereby bringing the pure truth of God down to the level of the terrorists’ own blindness and moral perversion'.
Unfortunately in recent days we have witnessed a radicalisation of community and religious discourse, with the consequent risks of increasing hatred, violence, terrorism and the growing and commonplace stigmatisation of Muslims and their religion.
In such a context we are called upon to strengthen fraternity and dialogue. Believers have formidable potential for peace, if we believe that man was created by God and that humanity is a single family; and even more so if we believe, as we Christians do, that God is Love. Continuing to engage in dialogue, even when experiencing persecution, can become a sign of hope. Believers do not wish to impose their vision of humanity and of history, but rather seek to propose respect for differences, freedom of thought and religion, the protection of human dignity, and love for truth.
We must have the courage to review the quality of family life, the methods of teaching religion and history, and the contain of sermons in our places of worship. Above all, family and schools are the key to ensuring that tomorrow’s world will be based on mutual respect and brotherhood.
Uniting our voice to that of Pope Francis, we say: 'any violence which seeks religious justification warrants the strongest condemnation because the Omnipotent is the God of life and peace. The world expects those who claim to adore God to be men and women of peace who are capable of living as brothers and sisters, regardless of ethnic, religious, cultural or ideological differences'

WASHINGTON — Since his first homily in 2013, Pope Francis has preached about the need to protect the earth and all of creation as part of a broad message on the environment. It has caused little controversy so far.
But now, as Francis prepares to deliver what is likely to be a highly influential encyclical this summer on environmental degradation and the effects of human-caused climate changeon the poor, he is alarming some conservatives in the United States who are loath to see the Catholic Church reposition itself as a mighty voice in a cause they do not believe in.
As part of the effort for the encyclical, top Vatican officials will hold a summit meeting Tuesday to build momentum for a campaign by Francis to urge world leaders to enact a sweeping United Nations climate change accord in Paris in December. The accord would for the first time commit every nation to enact tough new laws to cut the emissions that cause global warming.
The Vatican summit meeting will focus on the links between poverty, economic development and climate change, with speeches and panel discussions by climate scientists and religious leaders, and economists like Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia. The United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, who is leading efforts to forge the Paris accord, will deliver the opening address.
Vatican officials, who have spent more than a year helping Francis prepare his message, have convened several meetings already on the topic. Last month, they met with the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Gina McCarthy.
In the United States, the encyclical will be accompanied by a 12-week campaign, now being prepared with the participation of some Catholic bishops, to raise the issue of climate change and environmental stewardship in sermons, homilies, news media interviews and letters to newspaper editors, said Dan Misleh, executive director of the Catholic Climate Covenant in Washington.

He proposed among other drawings a circle of fifteen yellow stars upon a blue background;inspired by the twelve-star halo of the Virgin Mary, the Queen of Heaven of the Book of Revelation, often portrayed in Roman Catholic art, which can be seen in the Rose Window that the Council of Europe donated to Strasbourg Cathedral in 1953. Indeed, he proposed a design with “a crown of 12 golden stars with 5 rays, their points not touching.”
His flag was eventually adopted by the Council, with twelve stars and the design was finalised by Paul M. G. Lévy.
Arsene Heitz, who mainly designed the European flag in 1955, had told Lourdes magazine that his inspiration had been the reference in the Book of Revelation, the New Testament's final section, to “a woman clothed with the sun...and a crown of twelve stars on her head.”
He was a devout Catholic who belonged to the Order of the Miraculous Medal, which may have influenced his views on the symbolism of the 12 stars. Most of the founders of the European Union —Konrad Adenauer, Jacques Delors, Alcide de Gasperi and Robert Schuman—were also devout Catholics.

ReplyDeleteDear Constance:
Regarding your concern about Paragraph 460 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, here is a clarification...
Once we are baptized, we are given a share, a created share in God's nature. Sanctifying Grace is a SHARING in the divine life of Grace. We never become consubstantially 'divine' (like Jesus with the Father), but we are granted a 'participation' in that divine life. Since God dwells within us, we become 'like' Him, but NEVER Him. Everybody saved, in Heaven, must share this new divine life, since Heaven has no place for anyone except those who know, love, and SERVE the Divine One (which is only ONE God).

@ 3:25pm
ReplyDeletewww.gotquestions.org/you-are-gods.html
Question: "What does the Bible mean by 'you are gods' / 'ye are gods' in Psalm 82:6 and John 10:34?"
Answer: Let’s start with a look at Psalm 82, the psalm that Jesus quotes in John 10:34. The Hebrew word translated “gods” in Psalm 82:6 is Elohim. It usually refers to the one true God, but it does have other uses. Psalm 82:1 says, “God presides in the great assembly; he gives judgment among the gods.” It is clear from the next three verses that the word “gods” refers to magistrates, judges, and other people who hold positions of authority and rule. Calling a human magistrate a “god” indicates three things: 1) he has authority over other human beings, 2) the power he wields as a civil authority is to be feared, and 3) he derives his power and authority from God Himself, who is pictured as judging the whole earth in verse 8.
This use of the word “gods” to refer to humans is rare, but it is found elsewhere in the Old Testament. For example, when God sent Moses to Pharaoh, He said, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh” (Exodus 7:1). This simply means that Moses, as the messenger of God, was speaking God’s words and would therefore be God’s representative to the king. The Hebrew word Elohim is translated “judges” in Exodus 21:6 and 22:8, 9, and 28.
The whole point of Psalm 82 is that earthly judges must act with impartiality and true justice, because even judges must stand someday before the Judge. Verses 6 and 7 warn human magistrates that they, too, must be judged: “I said, `You are gods; you are all sons of the Most High.' But you will die like mere men; you will fall like every other ruler.” This passage is saying that God has appointed men to positions of authority in which they are considered as gods among the people. They are to remember that, even though they are representing God in this world, they are mortal and must eventually give an account to God for how they used that authority.
Now, let’s look at how Jesus uses this passage. Jesus had just claimed to be the Son of God (John 10:25-30). The unbelieving Jews respond by charging Jesus with blasphemy, since He claimed to be God (verse 33). Jesus then quotes Psalm 82:6, reminding the Jews that the Law refers to mere men—albeit men of authority and prestige—as “gods.” Jesus’ point is this: you charge me with blasphemy based on my use of the title “Son of God”; yet your own Scriptures apply the same term to magistrates in general. If those who hold a divinely appointed office can be considered “gods,” how much more can the One whom God has chosen and sent (verses 34-36)?
In contrast, we have the serpent’s lie to Eve in the Garden. His statement, “your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:5), was a half-truth. Their eyes were opened (verse 7), but they did not become like God. In fact, they lost authority, rather than gaining it. Satan deceived Eve about her ability to become like the one true God, and so led her into a lie. Jesus defended His claim to be the Son of God on biblical and semantic grounds—there is a sense in which influential men can be thought of as gods; therefore, the Messiah can rightly apply the term to Himself. Human beings are not “gods” or “little gods.” We are not God. God is God, and we who know Christ are His children.
The excuses for the wording in CCC460 are ridiculous. It should have been changed or worded better, and there has been plenty of time to do it.

Can't help but suspect that present office holder is an "Anti-Pope" and Ratzinger/Benedict XVI is a deposed prisoner in the Vatican!
ReplyDeleteRegarding CC460,
ReplyDeleteI had difficulty finding the source of the very last quote used in 460: "The only-begotten Son of God, wanting to make us sharers in his divinity, assumed our nature, so that he, made man, might make men gods." The footnote reference reads, “St. Thomas Aquinas, Opusc. 57, 1-4.” After much search, I found that this is part of a larger work:
Officium de festo Corporis Christi (Service/Ceremony of the Feast of the Body of Christ), Opusculum 57, 1-4 (Work 57, 1-4)
The ceremony itself is predicated upon the belief in the “real presence” in the Eucharist. By partaking of the consecrated host (after the priest had transformed the wafer via transubstantiation), the recipient literally ingests the flesh/body of Christ. The way I understand it, it is this that has the power to make one ‘divine’ – though I don’t think this is to be taken as strongly as it appears to 21st century readers. In any case, here is the full context of Aquinas’ words (57, 1-4; translated to English, taken from here):
Since it was the will of God's only-begotten Son that men should share in his divinity, he assumed our nature in order that by becoming man he might make men gods. Moreover, when he took our flesh he dedicated the whole of its substance to our salvation. He offered his body to God the Father on the altar of the cross as a sacrifice for our reconciliation. He shed his blood for our ransom and purification, so that we might be redeemed from our wretched state of bondage and cleansed from all sin. But to ensure that the memory of so great a gift would abide with us for ever, he left his body as food and his blood as drink for the faithful to consume in the form of bread and wine.
O precious and wonderful banquet that brings us salvation and contains all sweetness! Could anything be of more intrinsic value? Under the old law it was the flesh of calves and goats that was offered, but here Christ himself, the true God, is set before us as our food. What could be more wonderful than this? No other sacrament has greater healing power; through it sins are purged away, virtues are increased, and the soul is enriched with an abundance of every spiritual gift. It is offered in the Church for the living and the dead, so that what was instituted for the salvation of all may be for the benefit of all. Yet, in the end, no one can fully express the sweetness of this sacrament, in which spiritual delight is tasted at its very source, and in which we renew the memory of that surpassing love for us which Christ revealed in his passion.
[cont]
[cont]
ReplyDeleteIt was to impress the vastness of this love more firmly upon the hearts of the faithful that our Lord instituted this sacrament at the Last Supper. As he was on the point of leaving the world to go to the Father, after celebrating the Passover with his disciples, he left it as a perpetual memorial of his passion. It was the fulfillment of ancient figures and the greatest of all his miracles, while for those who were to experience the sorrow of his departure, it was destined to be a unique and abiding consolation.
Having written the preceding, I, like many Protestants, do not believe in the “real presence”. However, I should note that Luther did not challenge this point, and some Lutherans DO believe in the real presence, though they call the process consubstantiation. Moreover, Luther called for a Reformation, not revolution. I’m not saying I agree with Roman Catholic doctrine, as I have many points of disagreement. I just believe in honest and fair reporting of the facts (to the best of my knowledge).

Anon 5:37, 5:45,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info. I’ve been aware of the Vatican’s desire for interreligious dialogue – seemingly at the expense of proselytizing. I’d not read that particular article, though. I’ll comment on just one part:
…believers must demonstrate that religions are required to be heralds of peace and not violence.
From the perspective of a non-Christian, how would one prone to violence be persuaded that religions “must be heralds of peace and not violence”? Because the Vatican says so? Because the Bible says so? (The Bible does not say so, anyway, of course, as it denounces belief in other gods, other religions.) Why can’t one invent their own religion to foster violence in the name of their ‘god’ or ‘gods’? What’s to stop an individual bent on violence as per their religious belief?
“No, no, ya see, religions are required to be heralds of peace and not violence.”
“Oh wow, thanks; I wasn’t aware of that requirement until now. Shalom.”
No; they need Holy Spirit conviction, not empty rhetoric.
Perhaps this was just worded poorly, and the point was that believers should demonstrate, using their Christian faith and life as the example, that peace is a better way to serve God.

ROME, Italy–As the Vatican gears up for a high-level workshop on climate change this Tuesday, a group of 90 prominent scientists, religious leaders, and academics have written an open letter to Pope Francis, urging him to entertain the scientific and moral arguments against current climate change theories.
The writers profess their appreciation for the Pope’s efforts on behalf of the environment and his commitment to the Judeo-Christian principle of “responsible stewardship” for creation, but suggest that the people closest to him may not be providing him with all the facts regarding climate change.
The authors contend that contrasting worldviews have led to sloppy reporting of the facts, driven by an ideological agenda. “Rather than a careful reporting of the best evidence,” they write, “we get highly speculative and theory-laden conclusions presented as the assured results of science. In the process, science itself is diminished, and many well-meaning moral and religious leaders risk offering solutions based on misleading science.”
The authors believe that these considerations are especially important, given the Pope’s stated intention of releasing an encyclical letter on the environment this coming summer.
Caution is essential before committing to unproven scientific models, the authors counsel, especially when so much is at stake for the poorest nations of the world.
“Our models can become ‘seductive simulations,’” the writers insist, “with the modelers, other scientists, the public, and policymakers easily forgetting that the models are not reality but must be tested by it. If their output disagrees with observation, the models, not nature, must be corrected.”
While warning against apocalyptic panic, the letter encourages the Pope to dig deeper before aligning himself with a platform that may not have humanity’s best interests at heart.
“Naively claiming ‘the science is settled,’” the letter states, many prominent voices “demand urgent action to protect the planet from catastrophic, human-induced global warming.” It continues by asserting, “Attributing allegedly unnatural warming to the use of fossil fuels to obtain energy essential for human flourishing, these voices demand that people surrender their God-given dominium, even if doing so means remaining in or returning to poverty.”

ReplyDeleteThe authors question the commonly held notion that fossil fuel use endangers humanity and the environment because it leads to historically unprecedented, dangerous global warming, noting that computer climate models of the warming effect of enhanced atmospheric carbon dioxide are not properly subordinated to data. In reality, they propose, “there has been a growing divergence between real-world temperature observations and model simulations.”
One of the most powerful arguments the authors put forward is the effect that alarmist proposals of carbon-reduction would have on the world’s poorest populations, especially given the Pope’s ongoing insistence on a preferential love for the most vulnerable among us.
“The world’s poor will suffer most from such policies,” the writers contend, adding:
The poorest—the 1.3 billion in developing countries who depend on wood and dried dung as primary cooking and heating fuels, smoke from which kills 4 million and temporarily debilitates hundreds of millions every year—will be condemned to more generations of poverty and its deadly consequences.
The letter ends with an appeal to the Pope to reconsider what seems to be the direction the Vatican is taking vis-à-vis climate change policies.
In light of the evidence, the authors suggest, “We believe it is both unwise and unjust to adopt policies requiring reduced use of fossil fuels for energy. Such policies would condemn hundreds of millions of our fellow human beings to ongoing poverty.”
“We respectfully appeal to you to advise the world’s leaders to reject them,” they write.

ReplyDeleteAN OPEN LETTER TO POPE FRANCIS ON CLIMATE CHANGE
Your Holiness:
April 27, 2015—As world leaders contemplate a climate agreement, many look to you for guidance. We commend you for your care for the earth and God’s children, especially the poor. With this letter we raise some matters of concern that we ask you to consider as you convey that guidance.
Much of the debate over environmental stewardship is rooted in a clash of worldviews, with conflicting doctrines of God, creation, humanity, sin, and salvation. Unfortunately, that clash often works its way into the very conclusions of environmental science. Rather than a careful reporting of the best evidence, we get highly speculative and theory-laden conclusions presented as the assured results of science. In the process, science itself is diminished, and many well-meaning moral and religious leaders risk offering solutions based on misleading science. The effect, tragically, is that the very people we seek to help could be harmed instead.
This is especially tragic since science itself arose in Medieval Europe, the one culture nurtured for centuries in the Biblical picture of reality that encouraged the scientific endeavor. This truth is commonplace to a wide and diverse array of historians and philosophers of science. As Alfred North Whitehead elaborated:
“
The greatest contribution of medievalism to the formation of the scientific movement [was] the inexpugnable belief that … there is a secret, a secret which can be unveiled. How has this conviction been so vividly implanted in the European mind? … It must come from the medieval insistence on the rationality of God, conceived as with the personal energy of Jehovah and with the rationality of a Greek philosopher. Every detail was supervised and ordered: the search into nature could only result in the vindication of the faith in rationality. …
In Whitehead’s estimation, other religions’ ideas of a god or gods could not sustain such an understanding of the universe. On their presuppositions, any “occurrence might be due [as with animism or polytheism] to the fiat of an irrational despot” or [as with pantheism and atheist materialism] “some impersonal, inscrutable origin of things. There is not the same confidence as [with Biblical theism] in the intelligible rationality of a personal being.”[1]

ReplyDeleteIn short, the Biblical worldview launched science as a systematic endeavor to understand the real world by a rigorous process of testing hypotheses by real-world observation. Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman explained “the key to science” this way:
“
In general we look for a new law by the following process. First we guess it. Then we compute the consequences of the guess to see what would be implied if this law that we guessed is right. Then we compare the result of the computation to nature, with experiment or experience, compare it directly with observation, to see if it works. If it disagrees with experiment it is wrong. In that simple statement is the key to science. It does not make any difference how beautiful your guess is. It does not make any difference how smart you are, who made the guess, or what his name is—if it disagrees with experiment it is wrong. That is all there is to it.[2]
That statement, simple yet profound and absolutely essential to the practice of genuine science, follows necessarily—and only—from the Biblical worldview.
Christian and Jewish scholars have performed high-quality science for centuries. They are confident that good science leads toward and will not conflict with the truth about God and man. That is why there is a Pontifical Academy of Sciences, and why for centuries there have been science faculties in thousands of Jewish and Christian colleges and universities around the world.
As people of Biblical faith, then, we have a commitment not only to truth, but also to the practice of science as one path to truth. Today, when scientists run complex climate models on powerful computers to simulate immeasurably more complex natural systems like the earth’s climate, we must not forget our commitment to truth or that “key to science.” Our models can become “seductive simulations,” as sociologist of science Myanna Lahsen put it,[3] with the modelers, other scientists, the public, and policymakers easily forgetting that the models are not reality but must be tested by it. If their output disagrees with observation, the models, not nature, must be corrected.
Alongside good science in our approach to climate policy must be two preferential options: for humanity and, among humanity, for the poor. By this we do not mean to pit humanity against nature, any more than to pit the poor against the rich. Rather, we mean that because humanity alone bears the imago Dei, any effort to protect the environment must put at its center human well-being, and in particular the well-being of the poor, because they are the more vulnerable, the less able to protect themselves. As King David wrote, “Blessed is he who considers the poor! The Lord delivers him in the day of trouble” (Psalm 41:1, RSV). Good climate policy must recognize human exceptionalism, the God-given call for human persons to “have dominion” in the natural world (Genesis 1:28), and the need to protect the poor from harm, including actions that hinder their ascent out of poverty....read entire open letter...

As Pope Francis is not a scientist he is indeed dependent on advisors over this subject. Let us hope and pray that he chooses them wisely, because he will be responsible for whatever words he does issue.
ReplyDeleteFrom the Breitbart article Susanna cited:
ReplyDelete“The world’s poor will suffer most from such policies,” the writers contend, adding:
The poorest—the 1.3 billion in developing countries who depend on wood and dried dung as primary cooking and heating fuels, smoke from which kills 4 million and temporarily debilitates hundreds of millions every year—will be condemned to more generations of poverty and its deadly consequences.
The point, of course, is that these methods the poor currently use to cook food will be outlawed if “climate change” policies are enacted. However, if Francis is indeed listening to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences panel as in the article I cited above at 8:48 & 8:49, which is subtitled “Stabilizing the Climate and Giving Energy Access to All with an Inclusive Economy ” then this seems to be covered by adherence to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to include a redistribution of wealth (“Inclusive Economy”) to rectify what Francis terms “the globalization of indifference”:
The advances in measured productivity in all sectors – agriculture, industry and services – enable us to envision the end of poverty, the sharing of prosperity, and the further extensions of life spans. However, unfair social structures (Evangelii Gaudium) have become obstacles to an appropriate and sustainable organization of production and a fair distribution of its fruits, which are both necessary to achieve those goals…
…the world’s governments called for the adoption by 2015 of new universal goals, to be called Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to guide planetary-scale actions after 2015. To achieve these goals will require global cooperation, technological innovations that are within reach, and supportive economic and social policies at the national and regional levels, such as the taxation and regulation of environmental abuses, limits to the enormous power of transnational corporations and a fair redistribution of wealth.
Dear Susanna:
ReplyDeleteI pray Pope Francis will give heed to the letter from the better informed scientists about the fallacy of the "humanly induced climate issue."
Thank you for sharing the Breitbart letter with us.

I just found this Wikipedia article on Pope Francis where he is reported (as Cardinal Bergoglio in 1999) to have made a statement critical of the "New Age" theology:
ReplyDelete"Religion a la carte"[edit]
In the book-length interview "El Jesuita", Sergio Rubin and Francesca Ambrogetti asked Cardinal Bergoglio in 1999 whether he thought modern people tended toward "religion a la carte,"[107] a phenomenon which has been called "Cafeteria Catholicism". Bergoglio noted that this "is a very common trend that corresponds to the modern consumerism. Some choose a mass by how the priest preaches. But two months later they say that what doesn't work well is the choir and then change again. There is a reduction of the religious to the aesthetic... They treat religion as a consumer product, and this is very linked, in my opinion, to some vague theism carried out within the parameters of the "New Age", where personal satisfaction, 'relaxation', and 'feeling good' are mixed in. This is being seen especially in large cities, but is not just a phenomenon that occurs among the educated. In poor areas, in the slums, sometimes they seek an evangelical pastor, because 'I get it.'" [107]
