Javier Solana and Lisbon Treaty get second shot at Irish voters

The real power in Europe, at least as presently structured is with the Council of Ministers of the European Union.  Its Secretary General and the one who runs its affairs -- military and foreign policy is Javier Solana.  The Commission serves only to MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS to the Council of Ministers.  Ireland is said to have made a deal to get an Irish national on the Commission.  In exchange, Ireland is expected to ratify the Lisbon Treaty which it voted down earlier in 2008.  It looks like the pressure will be on Ireland to ratify and it will be extremely interesting to see how this plays out -- especially given the additional military powers now obviously under Javier Solana's "remit", not to mention his global governance aspirations.

Looks like the "good doctor" as Farmer puts it, is not going away anytime soon.  Stay tuned!

UN Blowback: More Than 650 International Scientists Dissent Over Man-Made Global Warming Claims

POZNAN, Poland - The UN global warming conference currently underway in Poland is about to face a serious challenge from over 650 dissenting scientists from around the globe who are criticizing the climate claims made by the UN IPCC and former Vice President Al Gore. Set for release this week, a newly updated U.S. Senate Minority Report features the dissenting voices of over 650 international scientists, many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN. The report has added about 250 scientists (and growing) in 2008 to the over 400 scientists who spoke out in 2007. The over 650 dissenting scientists are more than 12 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers.

This article was thoroughly entertaining. I'll bet the UN never figured the dissent would come from lab coats on this issue. Maybe this will get enough attention that people will wise up, or maybe it will be buried with all of the other things they don't want you to hear.

From the Chicago Sun-Times 12/11/08

Is Emanuel the adviser on gov tape?

President-elect Barack Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, refused to take questions from reporters this morning about whether he was the Obama “advisor” named in the criminal complaint against Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
The complaint states Blagojevich wanted a promise of a high-level appointment or some other reward for Blagojevich in exchange for Blagojevich naming Obama’s friend Valerie Jarrett to replace him in the U.S. Senate.

Emanuel was uncharacteristically absent from Obama’s news conference this morning. He was spotted two hours later in the lobby of Chicago’s City Hall. He was there to listen to his two children performing in a concert with their school, Anshe Emet.

A Sun-Times reporter pressed him to comment about whether he was the emissary named in the criminal complaint.

“You’re wasting your time,” Emanuel said. “I’m not going to say a word to you. I’m going to do this with my children. Dont do that. I’m a father. I have two kids. I’m not going to do it.”

Asked, “Can’t you do both?” Emanuel replied, “I’m not as capable as you. I’m going to be a father. I’m allowed to be a father,” and he pushed the reporter’s digital recorder away.

Blagojevch was caught on tape saying that he wanted the Obama advisor in question to know what Blagojevich wanted in exchange for the Jarrett appointment.

Blagojevich said, “He asks me for the fifth CD thing, I want it to be in his head.” Emanuel represents the 5th Congressional District in Illinois.

No one in the Obama campaign or administration has been charged with any wrongdoing. Obama said this morning that none of his staff has had a hand in any dealmaking on his Senate replacement.

Javier Solana's close friend, Colin Powell speaks out on the Republican Party (12/11/08):

In an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria for Sunday's "GPS" program, President Bush's former secretary of state said his party's attempt "to use polarization for political advantage" backfired last month.

"I think the party has to take a hard look at itself," Powell said in the interview, which was taped Wednesday. "There is nothing wrong with being conservative. There is nothing wrong with having socially conservative views — I don't object to that. But if the party wants to have a future in this country, it has to face some realities. In another 20 years, the majority in this country will be the minority."

Powell, who crossed party lines and endorsed President-elect Barack Obama just weeks before the election, said the GOP must see what is in the "hearts and minds" of African-American, Hispanic and Asian voters "and not just try to influence them by the principles and dogma."

"I think the party has to stop shouting at the world and at the country," Powell said. "I think that the party has to take a hard look at itself, and I've talked to a number of leaders in recent weeks and they understand that."

Powell, who says he still considers himself a Republican, said his party should also stop listening to conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

"Can we continue to listen to Rush Limbaugh?" Powell asked. "Is this really the kind of party that we want to be when these kinds of spokespersons seem to appeal to our lesser instincts rather than our better instincts?"

Zakaria's full interview with Powell will air Sunday (12/14) at 1 p.m. ET on CNN.

Ireland to hold a second referendum on the Lisbon European Union Treaty

”Trying to force the Lisbon Treaty down the Irish people's throats again is not only a dangerous distraction from that agenda, it is profoundly undemocratic,” he said.

”It is no wonder that the EU is seen as increasingly unaccountable and out of touch if it won't listen to what people are actually saying.”

The second referendum is expected to take place next autumn, with details of opt-outs and concession concluded in June 2009.

A draft summit statement says: "Treaty to enter into force by the end of 2009. The Irish government is committed to seeking ratification of the Lisbon Treaty by the end of the term of the current Commission."

The Irish will get one more shot at this before the fall. I wonder if we will see it stick this time?

From the TimesOnline (12/12/08)

If the full moon tonight looks unusually large, it is not your imagination – it is the biggest and brightest full moon to be seen for 15 years.

Each month the Moon makes a full orbit around the Earth in a slightly oval-shaped path, and tonight it will swing by the Earth at its closest distance, or perigee. It will pass by 356,613km (221,595 miles) away, which is about 28,000km closer than average.

The unusual feature of tonight is that the perigee also coincides with a full moon, which will make it appear 14 per cent bigger and some 30 per cent brighter than most full moons this year – so long as the clouds hold off from blocking the view.

The next closest encounter with a full moon this large will not be until November 14, 2016.

In addition to this lunar flypast, much of Britain may also be treated to a strange phenomenon known as the moon illusion. As the Moon rises in the late afternoon, it will appear even larger as it lies close to the horizon. Psychologists have tried to explain this as a trick of the eye, as the landscape on the horizon appears to make the Moon loom much larger, an effect that disappears as the Moon rises above the horizon, although viewing it through a tube, such as a toilet roll, can make it look large again.

With the Moon approaching so close to the Earth, its gravity will pull a slightly higher tide than normal for a full moon. This so-called perigeal tide adds about 0.5m (1.6ft) to the high-water mark, and with freshening southwesterly winds forecast, this may cause some flooding, especially along parts of the South West coast.

Tonight’s full moon is also notable for rising to its greatest height in the night sky for the entire year, lying almost overhead at midnight. This is because we are approaching the winter solstice, on December 21, and thanks to the tilt of the Earth the Moon appears at its highest, as the Sun is at its lowest.

Another astronomical treat that could be seen tonight and for the next two nights is the annual Geminid meteor shower, one of the year’s best displays of shooting stars. Up to 100 meteors an hour can fly across the sky. The meteors, which are easy to spot with the naked eye, appear to shoot out from the constellation Gemini, hence their name, but they can be seen all over the sky. However, with a full moon so bright, the best place to look is away from the Moon.

IRELAND WILL VOTE ON TREATY NEXT YEAR, EU SAYS

By CONSTANT BRAND – 1 day ago

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) — Ireland has committed to hold a second referendum on the European Union's stalled reform treaty before the end of October 2009, the French government said Thursday.

France, which currently holds the EU presidency, wrote in a document expected to be endorsed by EU leaders at summit talks later Thursday that Ireland would vote again in return for changes to the so-called Lisbon treaty.

The rejection of the treaty by Irish voters in June left the document in limbo, as it has to be ratified by all 27 EU members before it can come into force. The treaty is meant to streamline the EU's 50-year-old rules of procedure and bolster its position on the world stage.

EU leaders on Thursday are expected to back some key changes to the draft treaty, notably scrapping plans to slim down the EU's executive office, according to the EU text obtained by The Associated Press. EU nations will also be prepared to offer Ireland other guarantees, including assurances that its cherished neutrality stays intact.

The guarantees are meant to ease Irish fears that the EU would strip away long-held Irish provisions such as those that outlaw abortion and guarantee workers' rights, and would dilute health and education standards.

Irish Foreign Minister Micheal Martin said all 27 EU leaders had to sign off on the changes being proposed, but said the changes would go a long way to address Irish voter concerns.

"The work in relation to these range of issues, on which we are seeking legal guarantees, is not complete," Martin said from Dublin ahead of the summit. Adding a second vote was conditional on the treaty changes being completed in the coming months.

The French text says a second vote would be held before the current term of the EU's executive commission runs out, which is at the end of October 2009.

"The Irish Government is committed to seeking ratification of the Lisbon Treaty," the summit document said. Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen is to formally present his country's demands for changes later Thursday.

Cowen is facing heavy criticism at home over his government's determination to stage a second referendum. Ireland is the only EU member whose constitution requires ratification by a public referendum.

Ireland's most prominent anti-EU treaty campaigner Declan Ganley said efforts to hold a re-vote were "anti-democratic."....read more...

THANKS FOR THAT AWESOME LINK DEBUNKING GLOBAL WARMING. I'VE KNOWN IT ALL ALONG.
Gore and the "inner panel" of "scientists" have created the best money making scheme yet. I think Gore should return his Nobel prize and this mockery should be exposed and passed on to all news agencies.
Spread the word!!!!!!!!
But now what do we do with all the new mandates and higher regulations? Not that these are bad, but the fines and penalties that they will slap on "the people" if we don't conform, and the way that they will enforce it needs to be thought out and given much consideration.

Does anyone else have a smog problem? I live in Calif. and finding the visibility increasingly worse. I also am wondering about the Chemtrails being laid out across my skies causing a white film as they linger and spread out. Talk about pollution!

LISBON TWO

The Irish economy is in free-fall. The economic landscape will look very different in October 2009 than it did at the time of Lisbon One.

Irish voters will likely be coerced into voting for Lisbon Two under the pretext that without it, the Irish economy will completely implode.

History has shown that people will vote for anyone and anything if they think it will save them and their families from destitution--keep food on the table, the heat on, a roof over their heads, order on the streets.

I am not hopeful about defeating Lisbon Two. If by next Summer polls indicate that the Irish electorate "will not comply," watch for the body of the very brave Declan Ganley to turn up mysteriously somewhere like the Phoenix Park. Ganley is the only genuine voice in Ireland against Lisbon, the only rallying point, but he has no political support. He has only popular support, and, for the moment, his money.

Doug in MI,

From the Associated Press 12/12/08:

MADRID, Spain (AP) — Unrest that has gripped Greece for the past six days showed troubling signs of spreading across Europe, as violence erupted in several cities.

Angry youths smashed shop windows, attacked banks and hurled bottles at police in small but violent protests Thursday in Spain and Denmark, while cars were set alight outside a consulate in France. Protesters gathered in front of the Greek Embassy in Rome on Wednesday and some turned violent, damaging police vehicles, overturning a car and setting a trash can on fire.

Authorities say the incidents have been isolated so far, but acknowledge concern that the Greek riots — which started over the police killing of a 15-year-old on Saturday — could be a trigger for anti-globalization groups and others outraged by economic turmoil and a lack of job opportunities.

“What’s happening in Greece tends to prove that the extreme left exists, contrary to doubts of some over these past few weeks,” French Interior Ministry spokesman Gerard Gachet told The Associated Press. “For the moment, we can’t go farther with our conclusions and say that there’s a danger of contagion of the Greek situation into France. All of that is being watched.”

As Europe plunges into recession, unemployment is rising, particularly among the young. Even before the crisis, European youths complained about difficulty finding well paid jobs — even with a college degree — and many said they felt left out as the continent grew in prosperity.

Is anyone else surprised they are waiting so long to do a vote in Ireland?
Perhaps those in charge know that things will get much worse. Then that way they will be assured to do what exactly Anon 4:45 said,
